2250 - The North American Union

Following the asteroid M/2039 16's impact into the Atlantic Ocean on May 2039, massive shock-waves and tidal waves killed an estimated 800 million. International trade is suddenly halted, and with the loss of millions, some nations collapse altogether. Many notable nations that collapsed was the United States of America, the United Mexican States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and many others.


The North American Union is a powerful military, economic and political force on Earth, and in space. Although, despite its power, it is not considered a superpower. It does not tend to station military forces in other countries, and practically never involves itself militarily in crisis and only involves itself diplomatically at the request of the United Nations. The North American Union's policies include the policies such as universal healthcare, universal citizenship, heavy regulation and taxation on large businesses, political support for small businesses, the complete separation of church and state, and highly restrictive gun ownership laws which resemble that of the European Federation, which has decreased the gun ratio of the population from 60 guns per 100 persons to 10 guns on average per 100 persons. The government operates similarly to Australia's and Canada's as a federal, parliamentary, representative democracy.


In 2196, 153 years after the collapse of the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as well as many Caribbean and Latin American states, an Ontarian led economic, military and political coalition between Cascadia, Quebec, New England, and the Southern American Confederation holds conference in the city of Toronto, the largest city in terms of population in North America. The conference lasts 5 months of the year, and soon ends in the announcement of the establishment of the NAU, the North American Union, which, as the founders said, would establish a strong, singular North American state between the 5 nations, and hopefully its success would attract other breakaways in North America to apply for state membership.

The nation's first flag was debated. At first, the flag was chosen to resemble the old Swedish flag before 140 years ago; blue background but with a white cross rather than a yellow one. This attracted the attention of many powerful atheist and secular groups, stating that the flag resembled too much of the cross used to represent Christianity. The flag remained the official-national flag of the NAU from 2196 to 2218; this was many due to all of the conflicts the NAU had to deal with in its beginnings and couldn't get around to petty issues like the flag.

The first nation to voluntarily submit membership was the California Republic in 2195. The California Republic's government, before it stepped down, being denoted to local state government officials, promoted the idea of North American Union state memberships to the non-NAU nations of North America. In 2198, the North American Lunar settlements, consisting at the time of a population of 327,000, of Armstrong City, Etrenia, Netaonma, New New York, New Olympia, San Lasirma, Sylania, Tranquility Sea City and Ushasenia formally declared independence from the North American Union, and in 2199, declare themselves the 'People's Democratic Lunar Federation'.

Meanwhile on Earth, in 2199, the Free and Sovereign Republic of Texas, intimidated and paranoid of the North American Union's atheist stance and rapid expansion - allied with the Holy Republic of Deseret - attacks the North American Union. This, of course, ends in failure for both the nations, as the North American Union responds by bombarding Houston from the Gulf of Mexico over 300 kilometers away with fighter-bombers from the NAS Bernardo L. Seixas and the NAS Enterprise, as well as 7 long-range artillery cruisers. Shortly after the bombardment, estimates of deaths were produced to be in the 500,000 to 600,000 range. Texas promptly surrendered after ground forces moved past its borders. As Texas was a surprisingly heavily armed nation (its ratio is 90 firearms per 100 persons), there were small-scale engagements between Texan and North American forces; however these engagements often ended in the civilian fighters surrendering or being shot, as they were, again, civilians with no proper military training and only mid-to-late 21st century small arms.

The footage of civilians fighting back against invading forces was played throughout Texas and the NAU during the main course of the conflict. One NAU politician, Lorie Bachelot, leader of the North American Labour Party in 2199, stated that "this destroyed the Texan cultural myth of armed independence in time of conflict from military and police forces. They have bigger guns, know how to use those guns, and have proper training. You're not going to stop a military assault with 5 or 10 idiots with obsolete, V5 carbine assault rifles, doesn't matter if their switched to auto, and you definitely aren't scaring the government or military into not performing a military coup or becoming a fascist or communist dictatorship or whatever by owning one".

In mid-2199, Texas, and soon Deseret surrendered, and the North American Union annexed them into the union.

Meanwhile, on Earth's moon in 2199, the reason for this declaration was motivated by the North American colonies' inhabitants (unlike the North American inhabitants on Earth) seeing themselves as citizens of Cascadia, or California, or the Southern American Confederation, and saw the North American Union as a tyrannical dictatorship that moved in to replace their old, democratically free states. Their evidence of this was the heavy taxation on goods from their colonies, and the lack of political and civil freedoms, and although, this may seem a legitimate concern, almost every nation on Earth did that to their extra-planetary colonies, and all the former nation-states that joined the NAU did the same thing to these colonies as the NAU did, and the colonial governors never filed complaints; mainly because it almost never affected the way they lived.

The Lunar Federation militia seized control of the Lunar ISE (International Space Elevator) that was constructed in 2145 by the UNSC (United Nations Space Command) in cooperation with the nations of Earth in order to halt any mass movement onto Luna, as mass transit and transport was handled by space elevator at this point, and travel by actually landing a space ship was almost unheard of, and no single ship would be able to carry an army of astronauts to Luna without docking at the ISE. Since the ISE was viewed by the people of Earth as belonging to all of Humanity (it legally belonged to the UNSC), this basically pissed everyone on Earth off, and resulted in nations on Earth telling all their colonies on Earth's moon to cease all cooperation with the Lunar Federation, and some even demanded that their colonies outright attack the Lunar Federation, the colonies, though severally unarmed, retained small militia and security forces, of which the Lunar Federation was employing. Some colonies, obviously, also declared independence after these demands were made, declaring themselves their own nations, or integrating with the People's Democratic Lunar Federation.

The Lunar Federation, after integrating all the allies it could, began a campaign of annexation against its neighbors. Settlement after settlement either surrendered or hunkered down and was soon under siege. These settlements that were sieged were always mining settlements that would have been constructed into the ground and mountains, which could survive bombardment. The Lunar Federation was able to secure itself so easily due to its fighting force of an estimated 81,000 military personnel, 25% of its population; all the men of fighting age, the Lunar Federation had also converted much of its heavy machinery into war machines and use them to rule over settlements, and the North American Union had a several years prior to the revolution, when it was first formed, constructed an estimated 12 'Lunar' tanks; specialized tank units designed to function in the low gravity environment of the moon, and given them to their now rebelling Lunar colonies, as well as a 20 artillery pieces, and 10 orbital aircraft, capable of launching from airports and space terminals in settlements, and fighting off ships in orbit.

The People's Democratic Lunar Federation, by 2200, had converted many of their resource and mineral production facilities into crude military-industrial complexes, and actually began to construct their own crude military equipment, and aircraft, and by the end of the year, almost all Lunar settlements had fallen victim to the Lunar Federation, with the exception of some hold-out, isolated mining settlements with populations between 500 to a 1,000 inhabitants, who have not significant enough to be noticed by the Lunar Federation's military command.

In 2201, realizing the danger of a united extra-planetary state, self-sustaining, with the resources of all of Earth's moon at its disposal, and able to survive orbital blockages, the UNSC informs the UN general assembly it would be a good idea to negotiate with the rebels and try to come to some solution that suits everyone. The North American Union reluctantly agrees and begins talks over radio broadcasts with the Lunar Federal Directorate. These talks end in failure, and a state a war between Earth and the Lunar Federation continues.

In 2206, the North American Union began secretly developing the Vacuum-U series of space fighters; high powered Earth-to-orbit fighter craft, designed to travel to Luna, and destroy the Lunar Federation's infrastructure, and air-raid them, soon, hopefully, forcing them to surrender the ISE, which would result in the fleet of international orbital military ships around Luna pouring ground troopers onto the surface of Luna. Missiles and laser-styles had been highly ineffective, as the Lunar Federation settlements were defended by automated turret systems, which shot down orbital bombardment projectiles, such as tungsten rods, and missiles and the orbital lasers were ineffective against the Lunar Federation's particle shields; large, thick clouds projected around settlements which would break up the laser's intensity before it hits its target; a similar tech used against small incoming meteors.

In 2205, the People's Democratic Lunar Federation drafts its own constitution, which many Earth nations, even Russia, cite as "a bit too far-right", and "highly un-progressive". In 2209, the first 15 Vacuum-U8s are finished in a state-run, military factory in Saskatchewan, and were armed with anti-aircraft particle projectors, air-to-air missiles, and bunker buster bombs. In 2210, 16 squadrons (25 planes each), or 400 Vacuum-U8s, powered by advanced nuclear fusion reactors, left the airports in Saskatchewan, Quebec, Cuba, and California, and when leaving the atmosphere, began to thrust along at 18 km a second, or 64,000 kilometers an hour.

The 16 squadrons reach Luna in almost 6 hours, then entered the thin Lunar atmosphere, and, at a top recommended velocity of 5 kilometers per second, or 18,000 kilometers an hour, proceeding to bomb Lunar Federation military installations and heavy manufacturing sectors - leaving agricultural, habitation, and other sectors untouched.

The Vacuum-U8s were pitch-black and silent in the Lunar atmosphere - making their straffing runs virtually undetectable until a thermobaric weapon worth over 100 tons of TNT is dropped on an installation, and they were literally invisible, in the sense their shell was constructed to blend into its environment and was coated with an electromagnetic painting, which radar guidance systems would look straight through. Over the course of 24 hours, an estimated 150,000 of the moon's 6.4 million was killed.

Defense was shattered, and the government was thrown into disarray. The Lunar Federation militias either abandoned the ISE, or surrendered to incoming forces, allowing international armed forces to pour in from the international space elevator's pods, and capture settlements one by one.

In 2218, a referendum was held to change the flag of the Union to one of 6 flag opinions; the modified flag of the capital and the city where the original formation conference was held, Toronto, won.

I live in the US, we don't have universal healthcare, universal education. Lol, we don't need that shit. We need our military budget, because in our disillusion, without the USSR violently spreading cummunism, we're now locked in a cold war AGAINST EVERYBODY who might be able to attack us.
